Mission:
First Deployment
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: The night before launch,
[Moved this to it's own post since there were enough words for it to be it's own thing. Maybe Col. Mack will stop in and ask y'all to come with - stand by]
After leaving the launch party, Dr. Peters made is way to Sickbay.
In the sickbay, O'Flynn was finishing up doing the supplies inventory. She was excited when she was assigned to the ship as a nurse, the only nurse. She had been told that there were to be 5 total nurses, but there was a hold up in assigning the others.
Doctor Coleman was a great doctor, and she looked up to him like a father figure. Doctor Peter's on the other hand, was handsome, smart and a great surgeon. She developed a crush on him. She was just about to leave for the mixed when Peter's walked through the door. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw him. "Party over already?" she asked.
"No, I just decided to leave early. You going to the party?" he asked. "I was thinking about it. Were there many people there?" O'Flynn asked. "A few, but I didn't want to stay that long." Peter's responded.
Just then, the doors opened and a injured crewman was brought in for treatment.
"What happened?" Peter's asked. "He was working on a conduit when it exploded." replied one of the people who brought him in. Peter's had the patient moved him to the exam table and started examining him.
"Computer, start recording." The computer beeped. "First and second-degree burns on his face and both hands." Peter's noticed some blood on the patient's neck. "Blood on the patient's left side of the neck." Peter's took a closer look. A small piece of shrapnel was embedded in the patient's neck. "Nurse. Ready the imaging scanner." O'Flynn walked to the display control and pressed a button. The chamber door slid open, and the bed, and patient, were wheeled into the chamber. Peter's watched as the scan progressed. "Damn it." "What the matter, doctor?" "That shrapnel may have nicked the carotid artery in his neck. We pull it out and he could bleed to death in minutes." Peter's went over his options in his head. "Nurse, prepare for blood transfusion. We'll need plenty of his blood type on hand, then prep the patient for surgery." While O'Flynn started working, Peter's changed into his surgical scrubs. When he returned to the table, O'Flynn had blood standing by. The patient was ready, O'Flynn was ready and the doctor was ready.
Peters looked at O'Flynn. "When I tell you, you will put your finger on the wound after I pull the shrapnel out. There will be a lot of blood, so if you are uncertain now is the time to tell me."
O'Flynn shook her head. "I can handle it sir."
Peters used his fingers and pulled out the shrapnel. Blood started gushing out of the wound. O'Flynn placed her finger near the wound, stopping some of the blood. The transfusions continued. Peter's started suturing the wound. Blood was still coming out of the wound. "Move your finger." Peter's yelled. And when O'Flynn did so, Peter's continued suturing the wound, and finally closed it up. Peter's checked the monitor....all life signs were stable. Blood transfusions continued for the night.
"He should recover." said Peter's.
Peters looked at a blood stained O'Flynn. "You did very well."
O'Flynn was very happy to receive such praise from the doctor on her work. "Thank you, doctor." She headed back to her quarters to change clothes and wash up.
Peters went and checked on the progress of his patient, then returned to his desk and did some paperwork.
Sub-Commander T'shir and Colonel McEntyre were walking down the corridor on their way to make their appearance at the mixer that Counselor Johansen had arranged. "While I do intend to make every effort to... get along with the crew, I must admit Colonel, I don't know that I will ever full master the communication skills needed to fit in at a human party."
Josiah nods to the Vulcan.
"Trust me, I'm still learning that skill myself. Was never one for parties. Even back at West Point, It was mostly nights in the dorm with my roommate and his boyfriend, deep in study or challenging each other to tabletop wargames. You'd be surprised by what you can learn by matches of 'Axis and Allies 1942'."
"Matches?" T'shir questioned. "Is that a sport?" She inquired. T'shir paused in front of Sickbay noting that the lights were on.
“It’s…sort of like…”
The Colonel stops as T’shir does, noticing the same thing.
“Is sickbay supposed to be on right now?”
He asks curiously.
"Perhaps someone was injured," T'shir opined. "Shall we inquire?"
“We shall inquire”
Josiah says, picking up the pace til they got to the sickbay doors, pressing the open button and entering the massive sickbay of the Unicorn, putting his beret under one of his jacket's epaulettes before entering.
"Hello?" T'shir called into the Sickbay, once the Colonel had opened the doors. "Is someone injured?"
Peters stepped out from behind a curtain. "Sir, sub-commander, can I help you with something?"
"The Colonel was about to say a few words at the crew gathering in the Mess Hall," T'shir explained. "We were not aware that anyone was on shift in Sickbay at this time. We stopped in to see if someone had been injured. It appears that no one has." T'shir turned quickly around, eager to leave Sickbay after her unpleasant encounter with Dr. Peters earlier.
"I will be watching you closely, Doctor ."
The Colonel said before pulling his beret from under his jacket epaulette, placing his it back on his head before turning on his heel and following the Sub-Commander out the door.
Peters watched them as they turned and walked away, not giving him the chance to say that he did have a patient and that the patient was in recovery. The sickbay logs reflect the operation. Not given the chance to explain, he changed into his lab coat and left sickbay and headed to the mess hall.
Peters walked into the mess hall, and took a place near the back.
