Time To Chat?

617 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: First Deployment
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: 16 Hours Till Launch

Doctor Peters continued to go over the patient's files. His interaction with Sub-Commander T'shir didn't fill him with confidence. He noticed that the new counselor was now onboard. He checked to see where her office was.

His walked over and touched the button on the wall, "Doctor Peters to Doctor Johansen."

Amelia heard the call from Peters and stood up from her desk and walked to the wall. "Johansen here. How can I help Dr. Peters?"

"Counselor, I was wondering if you had the time to complete your physical?" Peters stood by and waited for a reply.

Amelia looked at her watch. "I suppose," she responded. "I'll be right down."

Sickbay was on the same deck as Amelia's office, and just a short walk, so it was less than a minute before she was inside Sickbay's doors. "Dr. Peters?" She called out.

Jack appeared from out behind one of the privacy screens. "Yes? Are you Dr. Johansen?"

"You can call me Amelia," Johansen confirmed. "We can get this over with. If you're having the same luck I am with psych evals, I'm sure you have a lot left to do yet. It's a bit like herding cats, isn't it?"

"Jack." He smiled. "Like pulling teeth sometimes, it's the eager ones that worry me." He walked to the exam table. "If you wouldn't mind."

Amelia sat on the table as she was directed. "Nothing has changed since my last physical," she told him. "No current medications. After the attack I had trouble sleeping for a few nights, but that's to be expected. The other time I was assigned to a starship, the first week or so after launch, I'd often wake up disoriented, but could shake it off in 10-20 minutes or so, and it went away after a time. I'm not sure if I'll experience that again or not."

"That's a lot to deal with. I can give you an injection that will help with the disorientation, if you want." He started the scan, watching the monitor as the scan progressed. After a few minutes, "That's it, all done." He looked at her. "Anything else you wish to tell me?"

"I think I'll just wait on the injection and see if it's even an issue this time. That was my first deep space assignment, so it could have just been my body adjusting," Amelia responded. "I can't think of anything else. I've always been pretty healthy. I spent a lot of time outdoors as a child." Amelia stepped down off the table. "That's it?" she asked.

"Outdoor girl? Wouldn't have pegged you for that." He smiled at her. "Some people need longer to get their 'space legs' so I wouldn't worry too much about that, but if you have more trouble, don't hesitate to contact me. Otherwise, I think that's it....but would you like to have a drink with me sometime?"

"If you're asking casually as a coworker and potential friend then sure, but I'm not planning to get involved with anyone on board, so I want to make that clear," Amelia responded. She was friendly about it, but as the only counselor on board, she felt it important to not go looking for drama. And dating in close quarters like this was a recipe for drama.

"Then casually it is."

"Then I am definitely up for it," Amelia responded. "And I'll see you at the mixer tonight?"

"I'll be there. Gives us a chance to have that drink." answered Jack.

"See you tonight then," Amelia said, before making her way to the door. "Gotta go catch up on the personnel files!"

"And I should be updating the medical records." Peter's waved as she left.
