Begin Log.

I just made Lieutenant Commander. I arrived on board the Unicorn earlier and met with Colonel McEntyre, the Commanding Officer of this battleship. He is a very dedicated, highly trained and professional man. I had anticipated our discussion to be brief and had not anticipated the exchange of personal information. It felt like an informal-formal briefing. I was also extensively complimented. Had I been a younger man I would surely have blushed.

I just got off the comms with my wife with the news. My son, Andrew, is doing fantastically well. Both my wife and son are situated well in the new home we purchased just outside San Francisco. Catherine was ecstatic and shared in my amazement. She encouraged me to contact Grandpa, so I did after we finished. Grandpa George is doing well, despite the loss of Grandma. When I shared the news I ... well I don't think I've ever seen him beam with pride. Father was visiting at the time of the call and we all three shared in the news.

Dad was ... he was real proud of me. Said all those years with Grandpa had paid off. All I had to do was continue the Paladin legacy. I promised to. When I got off the call, though, I called Mom and shared my doubts. She dismissed them and gave me a good confidence talk. She was right, there is something within me deserving to blossom. I just have to have the confidence - and will - to enable it to. "Every flour deserves water," she said. This is my water. All I need to do is suck it in and blossom.

I have a lot of work to do now. Got to get Engineering ready. Have to study a few schematics for the new Warp 6 model Manifold Engine first. Lot of new pathways and intricacies. I didn't tell Dad or Grandpa, but I made the mistake of assuring my Commanding Officer a Warp 8 output in emergencies. I'm ... well I'm looking at these schematics closer and I'm not even sure I can get Warp 7.5 out of them. I think I dug myself a hole.

I have to try though. I have to. If nothing else for Grandpa. I'm going to make him proud.

End log.
