Personality & Traits
General Overview | Kurt has always been characterized as quiet unless you can ply him with cherry or apple schnapps - then he won't shut up. For the most part, Kurt cares deeply about those around him or those under his charge. He is a MACO's MACO, but he doesn't blindly follow orders. He believes that a MACO's best weapon is their mind.
Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths: Tough but Fair - Stemming from his time as a young MACO, Kurt learned that being hard doesn’t have to mean being cruel. His performance reviews all praise his ability to be strict with younger MACOs while preserving a sense of fairness. Unorthodox Methods: Kurt’s time in the outer colonies taught him to improvise greatly. Everything was lacking in the colonies—supplies, equipment, people—except time. Karl learned the value of opportunistic training and bartering with the civilian population. Weaknesses: Family Legacy - Kurt is painfully aware that he is his family’s male heir. With his brother Uwe’s death in the Xindi Incident, Kurt became the head of his family. This means seeing to the family’s needs. Keeping tabs on his younger brother, Karl-Heinz, is incredibly easy: “Karlchen,” as he’s known, just enlisted in MACO service. However, keeping up with his twin sister, Emma, is more complicated. She entered Starfleet service as a Trauma Nurse after the loss of Uwe. They speak as often as they can, but for Kurt - it’s never enough. In some ways, his MACOs have become a surrogate family. |
|
Ambitions | Ambitions: To get his MACOs and Starfleet personnel back home and to continue his family’s legacy of service.
Hobbies & Interests | Hobbies/ Interests: Languages still hold a special place in Kurt’s life. In addition to staying physically fit for service, Kurt enjoys classic “kaiju” films (although rare). He recently began working on a Bachelor’s Degree from the MACO War College, concentrating in Military Science. |
Personal History | Kurt Hansen grew up in the Bavarian city of Ansbach, Germany. His mother, Inge, was a clerical officer for the local Catholic school, and his father, Ernst, was a police Sergeant. He and his twin sister Emma developed an affinity for languages. As a result, Kurt can fluently speak his native German, English, and Danish and is conversational in Urdu and Tagalog. Both his mother and father have passed away; his brother Uwe was killed during the Xindi attack on Earth. Kurt enlisted in MACOs in August of 2146. He attended MACO Recruit Training at MACO Recruit Depot San Diego, California, and graduated as the guidon bearer. His first posting was to the Janus Loop, where he gained EV qualifications and learned the ropes as a young MACO. He was then posted to Earth and did a tour of duty with the MACO Ambassadorial Detail (providing both ceremonial and physical security at the Embassies on Earth). Kurt was due to rotate out when the Enterprise mission became available. Kurt volunteered but was rejected in favor of someone with more qualifications. By this time, he had been promoted to Sergeant and came down on orders for detachment to Border Security. He was assigned to several patrol vessels, distinguishing himself as a Squad Leader. Kurt then returned to MRD San Diego as a Drill Instructor. He excelled in this position but wanted to get back into the field. Then, the Xindi Incident happened. Day after day, he watched the casualty lists as they revealed the names of MACOs he’d served with or knew. He soon received news that his older brother, Uwe, had been killed in the attack. Kurt volunteered several times for front-line service but was kept as a Drill Instructor because of his knowledge and experience. After this, Kurt rotated back to Fleet duties and was on orders for the MACO Detachment aboard the Columbia. However, a knee injury during Fleet workups prevented him from shipping out. It was during the final days of his convalescent leave that Kurt learned the fate of the Columbia. His orders were then amended, and Kurt was reassigned to a forward-deployed MACO company in the outer colonies as a Platoon Sergeant. He and his company defended two colonies against multiple threats during this assignment. Kurt has since been recalled to Earth for duties aboard the Unicorn as Detachment 1st Sgt. |
