Episode 4 - The Mystery of Carina VII
Location: Sickbay
OOC: Backpost takes place at the end of The Campaign for Coridan.
Captain Samuel Hunt had brought himself into sickbay which had been flooded with the wounded that returned from the surface of Coridan. In all honest, Hunt would have preferred to be left on the surface to continue the fighting. But he was never one to go against a Commanding Officer's orders. Even if he did disagree with the decision. During the ground fighting, the Captain had taken a hit to the shoulder. At the time, it didn't seem too bad. Which probably had a lot to do with the adrenaline going through his body at the time. Now he felt this burning sensation going through his left shoulder.
Sitting on one of the biobeds, he watched as the medical staff tended to the most serious injured. In a way, he almost felt embarrassed being here considering what everyone else was dealing with.
Iria was treating a broken leg when she smelled it. Copper. Metallic and salty...she looked up from her work to find the source. Human...bleeding...
"Captain." She said calmly, handing off her current work to one of the medics, and walking over to him. "You are bleeding..." The smell of molten pennies strengthened as she moved towards Hunt. "Please explain the nature of your injury."
"Was shot on the left shoulder down on the surface," Samuel explained. "Got it bandaged up. Nothing too bad in my opinion, but I ain't a doctor."
The Vulcan doctor said nothing in response - her eyes were on his vitals...heart rate up into mild tachycardia, and his blood pressure was lower than baseline. "I will need to inspect your shoulder visually, captain." She said calmly as she began cutting away his uniform around his shoulder, and what she saw...
Samuel winced a bit as she cut away the sleeve. The pain seemed to be getting worse, which he seriously didn't expect.
The fabric parted under the clean slice of the shears, exposing the shoulder beneath. What had looked like a simple dressing on the surface was nothing of the sort—the bandage beneath was saturated, the wound still sluggishly leaking through. The copper scent thickened.
The entry wound was ragged, blackened at the edges where the disruptor energy had burned its way into flesh. Tissue trauma radiated beyond the initial channel, a pulsing reminder of how close the bolt had come to ending him outright.
Iria’s eyes flickered once to Hunt’s face, noting the tightening of his jaw, the wince he tried to hide. “This is not superficial,” she said evenly. “The energy discharge has seared through muscle layers and may have compromised vascular integrity. You are continuing to lose blood.”
"I hadn't noticed doc," Hunt joked.
Iria’s brow lifted at the attempt at humor—a reflexive, minute expression that might almost have been amusement if not for the gravity of her tone. “Your levity is… misplaced, Captain.”
She reached for a sterilized injector and pressed it against his neck with practiced efficiency. “Analgesic. It will reduce pain perception while maintaining alertness.” The hiss of the hypo punctuated her words, followed by the faint hum of a tricorder activating in her other hand.
The device whirred softly as she scanned the wound, its readout reflecting in the glassy calm of her eyes. “There is partial carbonization of surrounding tissue. The projectile’s energy pattern suggests a glancing disruptor impact—fortunate, but not benign.”
She glanced back to him. “You should have reported for treatment immediately after the injury.”
I'll definitely remember that next time," he replied with a drawl to his tone. Clearly in the sedative was somewhat taking effect. "Will I live doctor?"
"Your immediate chances of survival are all but assured. I cannot speak beyond that, Captain. Given then you are human, I will postulate that you will return here more frequently for injuries than some of the other species I am competent to to evaluate and treat."
Hunt simply raised an eyebrow. "Not sure if that was an insult or compliment."
