600 words; about a 3 minute read
Mission:
Episode 4 - The Mystery of Carina VII
Location: Wardroom - Unicorn NX-151
Timeline: Post Coridan Campaign - December 13th, 2156
"Cordian was an unmitigated disaster!" The gravely voice of Admrial Guillermo Douglas, Chief of Starfleet Operations spoke. He was right of course, his tone coming through clear on the center screen of a massive three screen set up in the Unicorn's Wardroom. His office at Starfleet Command and the morning light of San Francisco bay shining in the background.
Josiah nodded, leaning back in his chair as Douglas' MACO counterparts, General Casey and Alyssa Duvall-Cain both nodded in agreement. Ve'lak always stoic simply stared but he most likely agreed as well.
Next to Josiah, on either side of him either sitting next to him at the confrence room table, was his XO, Saul Whitford, and his Second Officer, Sub-Commander T'shir.
Sat ramrod straight, Whitford was under no illusions as to the import of the meeting. It was seldom he fraternised with the brass, and he definitely didn't want to give a bad accounting of himself, or the Unicorn and her crew.
"According to our best estimates, we accounted for nearly 6 to 7 thousand MACOs dead. Most from the post-nuclear attack radiological effects." Casey added to the discussion. Josiah felt that, deeply, especially the losses he took in the form of Staff Sergeant Bassett who died on the transport up to Unicorn on the last day of the Campaign.
Two weeks since Coridan and the fleet was just now regrouping at Station Beta-2 near Proxima Centauri.
"Commander Whitford has additonal notes about Fleet Casualties as well. He has also been taking inventory of certain matters that we feel need to be addressed. Saul?" Josiah commented as he turned to Saul.
Whitford licked his lips for a moment, wondering how much he should let on over the channel. 'Well ...' he started cautiously, then leaned forward, hands on the conference room table. 'I'm sure you've read the summary of our after-battle report. The Unicorn's engines malfunctioned whilst in orbit of Coridan. We strongly suspect foul play, rather than battle damage to be the cause.' Shifting in his seat, he shrugged, 'if it is as we suspect, it might be wise to check over any incidences of unexplained system failures across the fleet.'
The Admirals and Generals all looked pale. Like they had seen ghosts.
"Admiral Ve'lak?" Douglas asked of his Vulcan colleague.
Tag T'shir as Ve'lak
Once Ve'lak was finished speaking, Douglas and Casey turned to address again.
"Coridan has sent ripples among our governments, both for the Nuclear attack on Coridian itself and the failure of mission. As such, late last night, the United Earth Parliament called a Vote of No Confidence in Prime Minister Samuels. It passed near unanimously." Douglas announced to the gathered. Josh looked shocked, Samuels had been one of the architects of the Coalition compact, his ouster was sure to destabilize things.
"Do we know who they're replacing him with?" Josh asked.
"A snap election is in three weeks. Your focus now is on your new mission: the planet Carina VII. SI has actionable intelligence on strange happenings on the planet. We need someone to go out, check on things." Casey added on before Douglas spoke again.
"As of this moment, Unicorn is formally placed on detached service. Admiral Hunter will be moving her flag to Yorktown 150."
"Understood Sir." Josiah nodded.
"This meeting is concluded. Good Luck and Good Hunting to all of us. Starfleet out."
The screens all went black, Josiah leans back into his chair.
"So...That was...Something."
